She wanted to cry, and she did, that night when she showered and attempted to scrub Zeus’s scent from her skin. However, at that moment, she removed her shawl, cleaned her fingers under scalding hot water, and changed Jagger’s bandages. Then, she sat in a wooden rocking chair, watching Jagger’s breathing and wondering if this...was this always her destiny?

“I understand.” she said, watching Jagger’s eyes hone into his laptop that sat next to his cleaned plate.

His laptop was the only mistress she had to concern herself with if she ever wanted to concern herself. He worked from sunup till sundown, typing rapidly and taking calls from one of his three cell phones. He took occasional business trips, but he was never gone for more than a day to two.

Jagger was consistent.

“I know you do.” he said, pushing his plate forward slightly. His eyes landed on hers, and a boyish smile spread across his face, and he asked the same question he did every morning after breakfast, “Cake, please?”

She smiled like she did and asked, “Chocolate or Vanilla?”

“Both.”

She stood, taking his dirty plate, fork, and knife. She walked into the kitchen, her robe tied tightly around her waist. The slip nightgown she wore underneath hugged her figure, clinging to her unbraced breasts.

She placed the items in the soap-filled water, brimming the sink, and removed the two loaf pans of vanilla bean and German chocolate sweetbreads from the yellow refrigerator. She listened to his typing keys, and her eyes grew in pride over the cakes. She slowly used a silver knife and cut a slice from each.

Her love affairs with food, particularly sweets, began as all innocent things do. It was purely by accident. She began with a dozen sugar cookies, attempting a recipe from one of the books layered in the dust on the shelf. She sat on the barstool, watching the windup clock tick, and the smell of sweetness filled the air. When they were done, she poured herself a glass of milk and ate every single one. She didn’t feel one sliver of guilt the following morning when she woke up with a belly ache.

Now, she couldn’t stop herself.

“These cakes will be the death of me, eh?” Jagger smiled, sliding the plate of sweeties closer to his chest. He scanned his coffee cup, and she promptly poured him more.

Though Jagger smiled often and easily, she knew he was only trying to be polite. She could tell that he was not as sweet as he seemed, and she assumed Alice commanded him to be this way.

“I’m glad you like them.”

“Who doesn’t enjoy sugar and chocolate? A fool or a lair.” he laughed just as the small white monitor filtered a gentle cry.

“Excuse me - ”

“Sit down, Iris,” Jagger said

“But, she is -”

“Sit. Down.” This time he looked at her, his sea-green eyes were daring her to continue. He nodded to the seat beside him. She sat, still holding the coffee pot.

Her daughter wailed again, this time doubling from the speaker and the upstairs bedroom.
